How to Hire a Divi Developer Without Overpaying

How to Hire a Divi Developer Without Overpaying

Your dashboard says the Elegant Themes subscription has expired, and the developer who built the site stopped replying months ago. Now a Divi page looks wrong on phones, and you’re afraid to touch it.

One seller quotes a small fix, another a full rebuild. Both call it “Divi work”.

I’ll show you what to check in ten minutes, what a Divi developer charges for a fix, new pages or a Divi 5 move, and how to hire one without overpaying or losing control of your site.

What usually goes wrong on a Divi site

Most Divi problems affect layouts or updates. Your content is stored in WordPress, and the layout is usually still there.

The causes I see most often:

  • Old style files after an update Divi saves styles as CSS files. After an update or a host move, old copies can make the live page look different from the builder.
  • Updates tied to someone else’s account Updates stop if the previous developer’s Elegant Themes membership expires or they delete the API key used on your site.
  • Add-ons that aren’t ready for Divi 5 Pages that use a module from a third-party plugin may run in compatibility mode after a Divi 5 move. Some add-ons don’t support Divi 5 at all and must be switched off first.
  • A plugin, child theme or custom code clash Another plugin, the child theme or code pasted into Divi’s settings can stop the builder from loading.
  • Phone settings nobody set Smaller screens reuse the desktop values unless someone sets their own. A layout that works on a laptop can then overlap or run off a phone screen.

For a site-wide critical error or white screen, read how to hire someone to fix a broken WordPress site.

Try this first (10 minutes)

Steps 2 and 3 clear caches or change a setting. Back up the site in your hosting panel first.

  1. Find out which Divi you have. In Appearance → Themes, note the Divi version. A version starting with 5 is Divi 5, anything lower is Divi 4.
  2. Clear Divi’s CSS cache. On Divi 5, go to Divi → Theme Options and click “Clear CSS Cache” at the top right. On Divi 4, go to Divi → Theme Options → Builder → Advanced and click “Clear” next to Static CSS File Generation. Clear your caching plugin too, then reload the page.
  3. Read the Support Center. Open Divi → Support Center. Copy the System Status report for the developer. If the builder won’t load, turn on Safe Mode there: it switches off other plugins, the child theme and custom code for you only. If the builder opens, one of those is the cause. Don’t save pages while Safe Mode is on, then turn it off.
  4. Check the Updates tab. In Divi → Theme Options → Updates, note the username and API key, and whose they are. If you see an “expired” warning, log in to your Elegant Themes account first. The warning also appears when the username or key is wrong.

Leave rollbacks to the developer. After a Divi 5 move, going back starts in the Migrator, not in Theme Options.

Hire straight away for broken sales or lead pages, missing add-on modules after migration, or an Elegant Themes account you can’t access.

If these checks don’t help, or you’d rather not change settings yourself, stop here. Every extra change makes the developer’s job harder.

Building pages or moving to Divi 5? Get clear on the scope first

For new pages or a Divi 5 move, scope matters more than Divi itself. Write down:

  • which pages you need, and how many of them have a unique layout
  • whether you have a design or layout pack, or need a design
  • headers, footers and blog templates built in Divi’s Theme Builder
  • forms, booking or a shop, and where form messages should go
  • who writes the text and supplies the images
  • whose Elegant Themes account the site uses, and which paid add-ons it runs

If the old developer owns the membership, get your own. At the time of writing, a Divi membership costs $89 a year or $249 once for lifetime access, and it covers unlimited sites.

For a Divi 5 move, the list is shorter: the add-ons the site uses and whether each one supports Divi 5. Elegant Themes’ migration guide promises Divi 4 security fixes for at least 12 months after Divi 5’s official launch, so if a key add-on isn’t ready, waiting is a fair choice.

Where to hire a developer

I recommend Fiverr Pro for Divi fixes, builds and Divi 5 moves. Fiverr vets Pro freelancers by hand for their experience, portfolio and service record before they get the Pro badge. I work on Fiverr myself and know its order process.

How you pay Fixed price per package, or hourly with a weekly cap on some gigs
Typical price for this job $185-450 for a fix, $285-1,200 for new pages or a Divi 5 move
How fast it starts Order now; fixes deliver in 1-4 days, new pages in 3-14 days
Your money Held by Fiverr until the order is complete
Who you hire A Pro freelancer, vetted by Fiverr
Best for Broken layouts, builder errors, Divi 5 moves, landing pages and small sites
Where to go Find a Pro on Fiverr

On bigger builds, ask whether the gig offers milestones. Some gigs from $100 let you pay in parts, and each milestone gets eight days for review instead of the usual three.

What it costs

Issues, unique layouts and add-on checks set the price. At the time of writing, Fiverr Pro packages fall into these ranges:

The job Typical Fiverr Pro price What it usually covers
Fix: one bug or layout issue $185-250 One broken section, a phone layout or one builder error, 1-2 days
Fix: several issues or a builder that won’t load $285-450 Plugin or child theme clashes, several pages, update problems, 2-4 days
Divi 4 to Divi 5 move, small site $285-600 Compatibility check, the Migrator run on a staging copy, add-on fixes, testing
New: a landing page $285-500 One page from a layout pack or your design, phone versions, a form
New: a small site, 5-7 pages $750-1,200 Pages, Theme Builder header and footer, content upload, basic setup
New: 10 pages or more, custom design $1,200 and up Custom design, more templates, a shop or booking on some gigs

Pro packages cost several times more than the cheapest Divi gigs. Compare what each package covers, not only the price.

Fiverr also adds a service fee at checkout, and faster delivery costs extra.

What the cheap price usually skips

Basic is the smallest scope a seller offers. Check whether it leaves out:

  • a backup and a staging copy before the live site is touched
  • finding the cause, so the next update doesn’t undo the fix
  • adding your text and images
  • testing on tablets and phones
  • checking each add-on after a Divi 5 move

For sales or lead pages, I’d insist on staging and phone testing.

Where Divi owners overpay

The extra money usually goes on things the site didn’t need:

  • A custom design when a layout pack fits Customizing a free Divi layout pack usually costs less than starting from a blank page.
  • Paying the seller for Divi itself A membership in your own name covers all your sites and keeps your updates if the seller leaves. If a quote includes a Divi license, ask whose account it sits in.
  • Add-ons for things Divi already does Each extra module pack adds code, often a license to renew, and one more thing to check before a Divi 5 move.
  • A rebuild when a migration would do Ask for a Migrator compatibility check before paying for a rebuild.

How to choose the right developer

Fixing someone else’s Divi build or moving it to Divi 5 takes different skills from starting fresh. Look for examples of the work you need.

Check reviews for the same job

Read reviews for your job (a Divi fix, a Divi 5 move or a new site), including the one- to three-star ones and the seller’s replies. “The menu broke on phones” says more than ten “fast delivery” reviews.

Ask for a Divi 5 example

For Divi 5 work, ask for a live example and open it on your phone. Pro vetting doesn’t prove migration experience.

Watch how they answer your message

Look for questions about your Divi version, add-ons and membership. A promise to build “any Divi design” tells you little.

The questions I’d ask before ordering

  • Will you take a backup before you change anything?
  • Will you work on a staging copy?
  • Will you use Divi’s global colors and presets, so I can change them in one place?
  • Which add-on plugins will you install, and who pays their renewals?
  • Whose Elegant Themes account will the site use for updates?
  • How many revisions are included, and what counts as one?

Red flags

  • They want to activate Divi with their own account and won’t explain how you’ll get updates later.
  • They offer paid add-ons “for free” with no license key. That’s a pirated copy, and pirated plugins can carry malware.
  • They ask for your hosting account password when a WordPress user and SFTP access would do.
  • They want payment outside Fiverr. Its support can only help with orders placed there.
  • They promise to “fix any Divi issue in one hour” before seeing the page.
  • Their portfolio has screenshots only, no live links.

How to give access safely

Share access only after ordering, through a password manager. Use separate accounts and remove them when the work is done.

  1. Take your own backup first. Back up the files and database in your hosting panel. Store the copy off the server.
  2. Create a separate WordPress user. Give Administrator access only if the developer needs to change plugins or Divi’s Theme Options.
  3. Give file access through a separate SFTP user created in your hosting panel. Never share your hosting account password.
  4. Keep Divi updates in your own account. Enter your own Elegant Themes username and API key in the Updates tab, or create a separate key labeled for this site. Never share your Elegant Themes password.
  5. Close access when the job is done. Delete the developer’s WordPress and SFTP users, change passwords, and check Users for accounts you don’t recognize. Keep your own update key in place.

Keep your hosting, domain and Elegant Themes account in your own name. Whoever controls those controls the site.

What to send before the work starts

  • broken page URLs and the staging URL
  • what’s broken and what counts as done (“the menu works on iPhone and Android”)
  • desktop, tablet and phone screenshots, plus exact error text
  • when it started and what changed just before
  • your Divi version, the System Status report and the add-on plugins
  • your host, WordPress and PHP versions (Tools → Site Health → Info)
  • for new pages or a Divi 5 move, your scope list and deadline
  • what you’ve already tried and which access you’re ready to give

Agree on “done” with the seller and record it in Fiverr’s order requirements.

After the work: check, accept, own your pages

Fiverr gives you three days to review a delivery before it completes on its own. Check it the same day:

  • open each changed page on phone, tablet and laptop
  • send a real message through each form and make sure it arrives
  • edit one heading in Divi yourself
  • check any changed header, footer and blog templates
  • ask what caused the fault
  • ask for any changes through Fiverr before you accept the delivery

Remove the access you gave. For new pages, get Divi Library and Theme Builder exports, plus the add-on list and renewal costs. Agree on support after delivery before ordering. Back up before major Divi updates. Regular maintenance helps you catch an add-on that breaks before your visitors do.

Summary

A broken Divi site usually needs a fix, not a rebuild, and your content is almost always still there. The bigger risk is paying for work the site didn’t need or losing control of updates. Run the ten-minute checks, keep the membership in your own name, then hire a Divi developer for one clearly scoped fix, page or Divi 5 move, with a backup and separate logins.

FAQ

Will I lose my pages if Divi breaks?

Almost never. Layout and builder faults don't delete pages from the WordPress database. Back up before anyone makes changes.

Can Elegant Themes support fix it for free?

Often, if the problem is in Divi itself and your membership is active. Support is included, and you can give them temporary access from Divi → Support Center that switches off after four days at most. They don't build or redesign pages.

Should I move to Divi 5 now?

Not if a key add-on isn't ready for it. Divi 4 still gets security fixes for at least a year after Divi 5's launch. Run the Migrator's compatibility check on a staging copy first, and move when the add-ons you rely on support Divi 5.

Is it safe to give a Fiverr seller admin access?

It's safe enough with a backup and separate WordPress and SFTP users. Keep account passwords private and delete temporary users afterwards.

Fixed price or hourly?

Fixed price for a clear job like one fix or a set number of pages. Some sellers offer hourly orders with a weekly cap, which can suit ongoing changes. Either way, agree in writing what counts as done.

What if I want to leave Divi later?

Plan for a rebuild if you move to another builder. Divi 4 pages show leftover code after a theme switch, unless you keep them running with the separate Divi Builder plugin. If leaving is likely within a year or two, tell the seller, and keep custom layouts to the pages that need them.
